There’s nothing like a bitter teachers’ strike – and one chockablock with national ideo-politico implications – to bring out the best, and not-so-best, in the newsrooms of the Midwest’s largest media market.

Beef Products Inc., one of the major producers of Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB), filed a defamation suit against ABC News in South Dakota state court Sept. 13. The action stems from reports by ABC News in March about LFTB, the so-called “pink slime.” (Editor’s note: This is the first part of a four-part series.)

The First Amendment is less important today as control of speech passes to private “benevolent dictatorships” such as Google, Facebook and Twitter.

Gateway Media Literacy Partners (GMLP) will honor the following two individuals and one organization with the 2012 Charles Klotzer Media Literacy Award, 3-6 P.M., Oct. 28, at the Ethical Society, during GMLP’s sixth annual Media Literacy Week kickoff event.
